Kayu Manis Tangkal Kanker Hati Ganas

Kayu manis yang selama ini dikenal sebagai penyedap masakan dan pengharum makanan, sebetulnya mengandung senyawa aktif yang dapat menangkal kanker hati ganas, menurunkan kadar lemak dan kolesterol, serta menolong para pengidap diabetes melitus. Bagaimana memanfaatkannya?

Sejak abad ke-16, kayu manis (Cinnamomum burmannii) telah digunakan sebagai bumbu masak. Di dunia terdapat 54 jenis kayu manis (Cinnamomum spp), 12 jenis di antaranya terdapat di Indonesia. Jenis tanaman kayu manis yang banyak dikembangkan di Indonesia adalah Cinnamomum burmannii BL, lebih dikenal dengan nama Cassia vera.

Kayu manis termasuk dalam famili Lauraceae. Rempah-rempah ini diduga berasal dari Sri Lanka dan India Selatan, meski tumbuh subur di Jawa, Sumatera, India Barat, Brasil, Vietnam, Madagaskar, dan Mesir. Di dunia internasional, kayu manis dikenal dengan nama cinnamon, yang berasal dari bahasa Yunani kinnamon. Kayu manis juga terkenal dengan nama sweet wood.

Bukan sembarang kulit
Kayu manis mempunyai bentuk seperti batang yang berdiameter kecil dan ada yang berukuran panjang ataupun pendek. Warna bagian luar dan dalam kayu manis adalah cokelat muda. Sifat kimia kayu manis adalah pedas, sedikit manis, hangat, dan wangi. Hasil utama tanaman kayu manis adalah kulit batang dan dahan, sedangkan hasil ikutan yang berupa ranting dan daun biasanya diolah menjadi minyak atsiri.

Kulit kayu manis dan hasil olahannya banyak digunakan dalam industri makanan, minuman, farmasi, kosmetika, dan rokok. Pemakaian kulit kayu manis dapat dilakukan dalam bentuk asli (bubuk), minyak atsiri, atau oleoresin.

Minyak atsiri kayu manis diperoleh dari kulitt, ranting, dan daunnya, dengan cara penyulingan. Kandungan minyak atsiri dalam kulit kayu manis 1,3-2,7 persen. Sementara itu, oleoresin diperoleh dengan cara ekstraksi menggunakan pelarut organik tertentu.

Penurun kolesterol dan lemak
Penelitian Fauzan Azima (2004), mahasiswa Program Doktor di Program Studi Ilmu Pangan IPB menunjukkan, ekstrak kulit pohon kayu manis efektif untuk menghambat pembentukan Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL = kolesterol jahat) di dalam darah.

Penelitian dilakukan dengan pemberian ekstrak kayu manis sebanyak 100-200 miligram per kilogram berat badan kelinci percobaan selama 12 pekan. Pada akhir percobaan ditemukan total kolesterol kelici turun dari 443,3 menjadi 139,1 mg/dl, kadar LDL turun dari 268,5 menjadi 95,8 mg/dl, serta trigliserida turun dad 122,2 menjadi 61,2 mgAl.

LDL disebabkan kolesterol jahat karena berperan rnengangkut kolesterol dari jaringan ke dalam plasma melalui proses enclositosis. Proses ini menyebabkan tingginya kadar kolesterol di dalam darah, sehingga dapat menimbulkan penyumbatan pada pembuluh darah.

Pemberian ekstrak kayu manis juga dapat menurunkan perlemakan pada hati kelinci. Perlakuan yang sama juga menurunkan kadar homosistein, yaitu suatu senyawa yang mendorong terjadinya aterosklerosis (penyumbatan pembuluh darah). Kadar homosistein menurun dari 25 mikromol per liter menjadi 9,9 mikromol per liter serum.

Sebaliknya, kolesterol baik atau High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) naik dari 32,4 menjadi 50,0 mg/dl. HDL adalah pembersih kolesterol yang berfungsi memindahkan kolesterol plasma dari sel mati atau membran yang hancur. Orang sehat memiliki rasio LDL terhadap HDL senilai 3,5.

Riset juga menunjukkan, kelinci yang diberi ekstrak kayu manis berisiko terkena aterosklerosis 4,2 kali lebih rendah daripada kelinci yang tak diberi ekstrak. Ekstrak kayu manis juga berpotensi sebagai antihiperkolesterolemia (penurun kolesterol) dan mencegah timbunan lemak di hati.

Disimpulkan, ekstrak kayu manis mengandung senyawa fitokimia yang berpotensi sebagai antioksidan, antagregasi platelet, antihiperkolesterolemia, serta mampu mencegah perlemakan hati dan pembentukan lesi pada aorta kelinci percobaan.

Menurut Azima (2004), kulit kayu manis tersusun atas senyawa sinamaldehide, turunan dari senyawa fenol. Di dunia kedokteran, senyawa sinamaldehid diketahui memiliki sifat antiagregasi platelet (kolesterol yang menempel di pembuluh darah). Agregasi (pengumpulan) platelet menyebabkan terjadinya aterosklerosis.

Senyawa yang sangat bermanfaat pada ekstrak kayu manis adalah tanin, flavonoid, triterpenoid, dan saponin. Keempatnya berperan sebagai antipenggumpalan sel darah merah, antioksidan, clan antihiperkolesterolemia (penurun kolesterol).

Selain dapat mencegah aterosklerosis, kayu manis diketahui mengandung senyawa antioksidan yang efektif untuk mencegah kanker. Kekuatan antioksidan kayu manis yang diekstrak dengan etanol ternyata lebih baik dibandingkan dengan BHT (antioksidan sintetis) dan tokoferol (antioksidan alami), pada konsentrasi sama. Senyawa fitokimia yang berperan sebagai antioksidan pada kayu manis adalah tanin dan flavonoid.

2-New Zealand Development Scholarships – Open category (NZDS-Open)
The NZDS-Open scholarships scheme is a non-bilateral scheme available to candidates of some developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific. Under the NZDS-Open scheme, candidates independently apply for a scholarship.

NZDS-Open scholarships are generally directed at employees of private sector or civil society sector organisations, including non-governmental organisations. In some countries, public sector employees can also apply for a NZDS-Open scholarship depending on the country or region-specific selection criteria. This criteria also determines the levels and the fields of study under which candidates can apply to study in New Zealand.

Through the Hungarian Scholarship Board Office, the Hungarian Minister of Education and Culture offers scholarships for foreign students and professors of higher education institutions as well as research fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in Hungarian institutions of higher education or research. Scholarships can be applied for under two systems:

BILATERAL AGREEMENTS

The Office of the Hungarian Scholarship Board (hereinafter HSB) welcomes applications by citizens of countries (and territories) that have a valid/effective educational co-operation programme with Hungary, or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Government or the Ministry of Education and Culture of Hungary and the relevant ministry of the given country (or territory). Assessment and shortlisting of applications is conducted by the relevant home country (or territory) scholarship authority or Ministry of Education, as well as dissemination of all information regarding the application procedure and deadlines. The list of countries (or territories) and contact information on the partner scholarship offices can be found on our webpage (http://www.scholars hip.hu/static/ angol/partners/).

Although the Hungarian Scholarship Board accepts applications from these countries (or territories) submitted directly to its Office, please note that the applications evaluated and forwarded by the home country (or territory) authorities always take precedence.

COUNTRIES WHOSE CITIZENS MAY APPLY ONLY ON THE BASIS OF BILATERAL AGREEMENTS:

Afghanistan, Lithuania, Mongolia, Palestine, Ukraine, Yemen and Vietnam.

SCHOLARSHIP POOL

In 2005 the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Hungary established a "scholarship pool", a scholarship system of various types of scholarships, allowing for applications from the following countries/territori es:
Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korean Republic, Kuwait, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, The Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Citizens of Austria can also apply for Hungarian scholarships through the Stiftung Aktion Österreich-Ungarn (www.omaa.elte. hu).
SCHOLARSHIP TYPES

Applicants can apply for all scholarship types in the "scholarship pool" system. The scholarships offered in the bilateral agreements announced by the foreign partners are also categorized according to these scholarship types. In some cases the co-operation programme/bilateral agreement does not contain all the scholarships listed under the pool programme, hence they may not figure among the scholarships announced by the partner office. For citizens of countries that have a bilateral agreement and a partner scholarship office it is recommended to submit their applications directly to HSB, in the pool system, in case the bilateral agreement does not allow for a specific type of scholarship listed in the pool programme.

Applicants are exempt who gained admission to a tuition-free program at an institution of higher education (state-financed university, full-time program), where the working language is different from Hungarian.

The following scholarships are available in the Academic Year 2010/2011:

A - semester / partial studies (3-10 months)
Can be applied for by: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students, especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature, as well as graduating students working on their theses, and students enrolled in "single track" university programmes (such as General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Veterinary Studies, Architecture and Jurisprudence) . Before application, students are required to have completed minimum two semesters at their home institutions. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on another occasion during his/her MA studies.

B - postgraduate studies, research (3-21 days or 1-10 months)
Can be applied for by: applicants holding a Master's degree or an equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do research for their dissertation, yet wish to stay in Hungary for less than 12 months. (However, PhD students cannot acquire credits at their host universities. )

C/1 - full PhD programme (36 months)
Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply, the scholarship is conditional upon successful entrance exam / admission to the respective doctoral school.

C/2 - partial PhD studies (12 months)
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited institution of higher education in his/her home country or in a foreign country (but not in Hungary).

D - postdoctoral studies / research (1-10 months)
Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent degree.

E - research stay (3-21 days or 1-10 months)
For associate or higher ranking professors or for researchers holding minimum a PhD or an equivalent degree.

F - summer courses in the summer of 2009 (1-4 weeks)
Courses must be chosen only from the list of Summer Courses 2010 published on the HSB website.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

These scholarships allow for study or research in any field of arts and sciences during the granted period at an accredited Hungarian higher education or research institution to be determined in advance.
Semester, partial, postgraduate studies and doctoral programmes must be carried out in state-financed institutions where no tuition fee is required. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on another occasion during his/her MA studies.
Type A (semester /partial studies) and type C1/C2 (full PhD and partial PhD studies) scholarships may not be extended. Type B (postgraduate studies), D (postdoctoral studies, research), and E (research stay) scholarships may be extended exceptionally, only under special circumstances, on one occasion. The scholarships are valid only for studies and research purposes in Hungary. HSB scholarships can only be used for conducting studies or research in Hungary, which means that scholarship- holders must stay in Hungary during the whole period of their studies or research.

The scholarships are awarded for the summer of 2010, or the academic year of 2010-2011, and these latter ones must be finished by 30 June 2011 at the latest.

CASES OF NON-ELIGIBILITY

Foreign citizens with a residence permit or in the course of applying for a residence permit in Hungary cannot apply.
Men and women, who have an employment contract or employment relationship as defined by the law in Hungary cannot apply.
Students applying for part-time or correspondence study programmes cannot apply.
Students applying for non state-financed universities cannot apply.
Students admitted to tuition fee-paying institutions of higher education cannot apply.

Terong, Antioksidan dan Pengikat Zat Besi

Sayuran yang satu ini tak asing lagi di telinga. Bentuknya yang khas dengan warnanya yang ungu membuatnya mudah dikenali dari sayuran lainnya.

Tahukah Anda bahwa terong mempunyai sifat antioksidan yang baik karena kandungan fitonutriennya mengandung komponen fenol seperti caffeic, asam klorogenik serta flavonoid seperti nasunin?

Para peneliti dari US Agricultural Service di Beltsville, Maryland menyatakan komponen fenol dalam terong berkhasiat sebagai antioksidan. Selain fenol, di dalam terong terdapat komponen lain yang bersifat melindungi tubuh dari infeksi bakteri dan jamur.

Meskipun terong bervariasi, tapi ternyata di dalam semua variasi terdapat kandungan fenol yang predominan yaitu asam klorogenik. Selain sebagai antiradikal bebas, komponen asam ini juga berfungsi sebagai antikanker, antimikroba dan anti LDL serta antiviral.

Selain asam klorogenik, komponen flavonoid seperti nasunin juga merupakan antioksidan serta pemberi proteksi membran sel tubuh terhadap radikal bebas dengan memberikan makanan bergizi bagi otak. Membran sel di dalam otak mengandung lipid yang tidak hanya memproteksi sel tubuh dari radikal bebas tapi juga mengabsorbsi nutrisi untuk tubuh dan membuang hasil metabolisme tubuh.

Nasunin juga berfungsi sebagai pengikat zat besi jika terjadi kelebihan zat besi di dalam tubuh. Zat besi memang baik untuk fungsi imunitas dan transport oksigen dalam tubuh. Tapi jika berlebihan, zat besi di dalam tubuh akan meningkatkan risiko penyakit jantung dan kanker.

Wanita yang masih mengalami menstruasi akan kehilangan zat besi setiap bulannya sehingga risiko mengidap penyakit jantung akan lebih kecil. Tetapi pada wanita yang sudah menopause dan juga para pria, zat besi tidak mudah dikeluarkan sehingga bisa terjadi penumpukan di dalam tubuh.

Untuk itu, nasunin yang bersifat mengikat zat besi ini bisa mengurangi pembentukan radikal bebas dan melindungi kerusakan sel tubuh serta mengurangi kerusakan akibat radikal bebas di sendi-sendi tubuh.
