National Workshop on Tracer Study

National Workshop on Tracer Study:

CONDUCTING TRACER STUDY
AND CAPTURING LABOUR
MARKET SIGNAL
University of Indonesia Campus, Depok
12-13 May 2009

BACKGROUND
In Indonesia, contrary to what is happening in developed countries, academic efforts connected to the interdependence of higher education with the workplace have not been paid significant attention. On the other hand, the competency of university graduates is experiencing a shift towards a greater awareness on the importance of generic and managerial competencies, besides specific and technical competencies.

Tracer study is currently incorporated as part of higher education accreditation system in Indonesia and thus has been recently prioritized as important activity of a higher education institution. Tracer study is an important indicator of quality university management. In 2008, Universitas Indonesia (UI) for the first time conducted a tracer study in university level. The objectives of the study were to obtain information on alumni characteristics, their current activities, employment and work, and labour market signal. The study also analyzed tracer study situation in Indonesian universities.

Result of the study showed that information on the importance of tracer study, benefit and its application was essentially needed. Universities should be informed about different purposes and diversity of tracer study, how to conduct quality tracer study, how to capture labour market signal, and how to gain benefit of tracer study regarding better communication with alumni.

Despite its importance, tracer study in Indonesia is not yet recognized as vital study for many universities. Current issues in Tracer Study have not been discussed intensely among universities and related government institutions such as Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower. Implementation of tracer studies in many universities and higher education institutions in Indonesia is rarely scrutinized and is rarely brought up in international or regional comparison.
